About Us
The Division of Recreational Sports has served the campus community since 1916, making it one of the oldest and largest collegiate recreational programs in the country. What began as a men's intramural program has grown and evolved to become one of the most popular programs on campus. A total of 90 percent of the student population, or more than 45,000 young men and women, participate in RecSports programs and activities, accruing more than 3.21 million hours of participation annually. The Division is composed of Intramural Sports, Fitness/Wellness, Outdoor Recreation, Sport Clubs, the Instructional Program and Informal Recreation. Facilities managed by RecSports include over 500,000 square feet of indoor and 40 acres of outdoor space. To serve its patrons, RecSports employs 45 full-time staff members and approximately 1,000 part-time student employees.
Changes Effective Fall 2010
Recreational Sports strives to offer a comprehensive program of the highest quality that meets the recreational needs and interests of students and other members of the UT community. One of the primary ways in which we hope to achieve this is by providing a wide array of both indoor and outdoor facilities that are available for drop-in use, open on a daily basis from early morning until late at night. Effective at the start of the Fall 2010 semester, RecSports implemented several adjustments in the number of facilities and their availability.
These adjustments were made in order for Recreational Sports to meet its cost savings obligation in helping the University fulfill its required budget reduction plan. We believe that these adjustments still afford the UT community with a diverse set of spaces and a vast schedule of operating hours that are accommodating to all users. Establishing these hours was done with the support of student leaders and the Recreational Sports Committee, a standing committee of the University comprised of students, faculty, and staff.
Specifically, several satellite facilities and the Gregory Gym Sports Café are no longer available. Also, the majority of the facilities feature altered hours. A complete listing of the 2011-2012 facilities and their availability is available here.
