Continuing a Tradition

Over the 93-year history of the Intramural Sports Program, much has remained the same but much has changed. Men, women and, starting in 1974, coed teams still compete in all the major team sports and individual/dual sports. In 1982, intramural teams were charged a fee to play for the first time in the history of the program. Starting at $10 per team, that fee today is $75 per team and will go to $100 per team in the fall of 2010.

With the current economic climate at the University demanding that alternative means of raising revenue be found or current services be reduced or cut, the Intramural Sports Program is at a crossroads. To become self-sufficient while holding down the cost to the student to play intramurals, an initiative to establish an endowment to help fund the Intramural Sports Program has been launched.

Endowment Campaigns

Multiple campaigns are in progress to fund this endowment. The Kappa Sigma Fraternity is one of the first organizations to commit to a campaign aimed at establishing an Intramural Endowment and has a
pledge of $5,000. The Delta Upsilon Fraternity already has a lead gift of $2,500 dedicated to their campaign for this initiative. In addition, a Women in Intramurals campaign, led by two Leadership Team members, Ann (Vandivier) Brodnax and Linda (McCalla) Williams, has targeted women who had a positive experience playing intramurals. Other groups starting their own campaigns include Oak Grove and the Intramural Senior Managers led by Team member Gordon Appleman. Click on the links below for more information about each campaign.
