Carolina, originally from Nuevo Leon, Mexico, has been working as a student employee to help pay her own way through college for almost four years. A member of our full time staff recently commented, “Carolina will do whatever it takes to get the job done and will do it with a positive attitude. She goes above and beyond no matter what the assignment. She is a real go-to person.”
The Value of RecSports During My College Career
by Carolina Canavati
The opportunity to attend the University of Texas at Austin and to be a part of the best recreational sports program in the nation has opened many doors in my life. Looking back on these four years, I find it hard to imagine what my life would have been like without RecSports. I have had a chance to exercise at the non-campus facilities, participate in intramural sports, work with energetic and motivated people, explore the outdoors, and make lifelong friends. My involvement with RecSports has enriched my experience in college by helping me grow both professionally and personally. I am a proud RecSports representative and try to positively contribute to the organization every chance I get. Even though there are expectations of what I need to do as an employee, I strive every day to learn something new, be a better person, and exceed these expectations.
Working for RecSports, I have gained skills that will help me in the future no matter what I decide to do after I graduate. I am currently pursuing a degree in Business Administration at the McCombs School of Business and will be graduating in December 2008. As a Building Coordinator at Gregory Gym, I interact with people with diverse personalities, life stories and goals. By making mistakes and learning from them, I became aware of the kind of leader I am and continuously try to make improvements to the way I relate to others. I am an assertive person when it comes to accountability, goals, and perseverance, and I am learning every day to really listen and empathize with others. This has made me not only a better leader but also a better person.
Throughout these four years in college, RecSports has helped me enjoy life more thoroughly. One of the biggest assets RecSports has is its people. Through my involvement, I have made many friends and met people who have changed the way I look at life. I enjoy spending time at RecSports events and facilities because the people I like are the people who are part of this organization. This satisfaction has translated to other areas of my personal life as well. I love my job and try to contribute in a positive
way every chance I get. Also, the work environment has made me more health conscious. After spending so much time at the gym, I have discovered the benefits of working out and running on a regular basis. These, along with all of the other benefits that I receive from being a part of RecSports, have made my learning and experience in college invaluable.
