A Letter from the Co-Chairs
Dear Friends:
In 1962 we initiated a truly unique physical fitness program on the campus of The University of Texas at Austin, which came to be known as the Early Birds. When we joined the group, we made a commitment to a regimen of personal enrichment, both physical and mental. We reasoned that if we could devote some time—even just one hour a day—for exercise, our bodies and minds would reap the benefits of added energy, reduced stress, and a more thorough enjoyment of life.
Over the years, our program’s participants welcomed and embraced the challenge of workouts at Gregory Gym and went on to become University administrators, elected officials, scholars, accomplished businessmen, and much more. The Early Birds represent the values of spirit and character of those destined to serve as leaders in our cities, states, and nation.
To mark our place permanently on the UT Austin campus, we have partnered with the Division of Recreational Sports to provide an opportunity to give back to a program that shaped not only our experience at the University, but also our lives. With your help, the Early Bird Scholarship will be awarded and provide financial assistance each year to students who:
• Demonstrate commitment to Early Bird values – responsibility, commitment, and dedication
• Provide beneficial, outstanding leadership to those around them
• Go above and beyond their responsibilities on a regular basis
• Represent the Division of Recreational Sports in a positive and favorable manner at all times
Our goal is to reach a minimum of $100,000 in scholarship funds that will be awarded each fall semester. The scholarship and its lead donors will be recognized by means of a plaque prominently displayed inside Gregory Gym. Please see the gift and pledge card to view recognition opportunities available with your donation.
We hope you will thoughtfully consider an outright gift or pledge to the Early Bird Scholarship and include the scholarship in your retirement and estate plans. By including the Early Bird Scholarship in your retirement and estate planning, you can diminish tax burdens while supporting students of Texas’ flagship university.
When we joined the Early Birds, it was the beginning of a life-long bond. This is our time to strengthen that bond for future generations. It is truly about pride, accomplishment, and opportunity. We invite you to join us in this exciting endeavor to preserve the Early Bird legacy and the future of Recreational Sports opportunities for generations to come.
