the intramural endowment - recruits campaign

Recruits pics

The Recruits have a decade-long history of intramural success dating from 1962 to 1972. During this 10-year period, our group won the All-Year Trophy Award for Independents seven out of 10 years. In addition, the Recruits appear on the Wall of Fame with some 26 team championships and over a dozen individual/dual titles in this decade of intramural competition. Moreover, dozens of individuals were named to an All-Intramural Team, four Recruits were named Best All-Around Athlete – Independent Division, and one was the recipient of the Berry Whitaker Leadership Award. You might be interested in checking out the photos on the Wall of Fame from this era at www.utrecsportsmedia.org where they can be viewed and purchased.

To honor the Recruits’ outstanding accomplishments, we are partnering with the Division of Recreational Sports to establish a permanent endowment to support the Intramural Sports Program. The Recruits’ Campaign will be one of many that are part
of the University-wide Capital Campaign with our efforts specifically aimed at supporting this 94-year-old program for future generations.

We invite you to join us in this exciting endeavor as we strive, in the short-term, to raise a minimum of $5,000 in order to be recognized on a Wall of Honor plaque in Gregory Gym that will feature the names of all who participated. Our long-term goal for the Recruits’ Campaign is to help generate an overall goal of $500,000 by 2016 – the 100th Anniversary of Men’s Intramurals, the third oldest intramural program in the country. We are asking for your support. No gift is too large or too small. Please consider this opportunity to give back to a great institution and to a program that so shaped our lives.

Sincerely,

..

The Intramural Program Today

Over the 94-year history of the Intramural Sports Program much has remained the same but much has changed. Men, women and, beginning in 1974, coed teams, still compete in all of the major team sports as well as every imaginable individual/dual sport. In 1982 the Intramural Sports Program began generating income to pay expenses. Teams were charged a $10 entry fee to play. In 2010 the cost has escalated to $75 per team. With the current economic climate at the University, there is growing pressure to find ways to increase revenue (such as increasing the fees to play intramurals) or cut costs (such as reducing the number of games played or hiring fewer officials). The answer to this current and likely future economic uncertainty is to establish an Intramural Endowment to enable the intramural program to become self-sustaining.
