In the fall of 1980, a major renovation project was undertaken to convert the intramural playing fields to a fully useable, multipurpose space. New turf, irrigation, lighting, fencing, support buildings and equipment comprised the project. For the past 28 years, the University community has enjoyed the area for activities including informal play, intramural contests, sport club practices and contests (football, soccer, lacrosse, rugby, ultimate, softball). The multipurpose turf area currently accommodates up to eighteen football/soccer fields or 12 softball diamonds, 40 lighted tennis courts with a backboard area for warm-up, and an archery range.
A feasibility study to renovate Whitaker Fields was conducted in 2007. The renovation would allow for much needed improvements to the aging infrastructure and would allow UT Sport Clubs and intramural participants to better utilize the space for practice and competition, while maintaining opportunities for informal recreation by the University community.
