Community Outreach

By using the intrinsic value of the service experience, Recreational Sports offers students several service projects each semester with the joint goals of enhancing the institution's service mission and developing students into enaged citizens. The Community Outreach Program is comprised of four service teams that offer students a diverse range of opportunities to give back. Students are welcome to join any service team to meet their personal and/or organizational goals.

Help the Homeless Initiative

During the colder months, RecSports sponsors a student-led initiative to bring food, clothing, and shoes to the homeless population of Austin. Hundreds of pairs of gently used shoes are abandoned in RecSports lockers each year. Our team collects these shoes, inventories and cleans them up for distribution to the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless (ARCH).

For the Children

Over the past four years the Outdoor Recreation Program and its students have reached out to serve the Helping Hand Home for Children, the Settlement Home for Children, and the Communities in Schools program. Our goal is to provide outdoor recreation experiences for underserved children in the Austin community. Coming from unimaginable backgrounds, these children are given a chance to bond with UT-Austin students, face new and exciting challenges that build their confidence and self-image towards the goal of academic success.

Invasive Species Eradication (I.S.E.) Team

Invasive species are the second leading cause for habitat endangerment in the world. Our I.S.E. Team works with the Austin Parks Foundation, San Marcos River Foundation, Grand Canyon National Park, and Texas Parks and Wildlife to remove invasive plant species to preserve our natural heritage.

Alternative Spring Break (A.S.B.)

RecSports provides coordination, leadership and development of custom Alternative Spring Break experiences for students. Students can participate in an existing ASB program or work with RecSports to create a specialized service experience.
