This Bouldering class introduces new climbers to the movement, physiology, and dynamics of bouldering (climbing without a rope). Participants will also learn terminology, safe practices, and movement skills, which will help them advance as independent climbers. The course will focus on bouldering mat placement, spotting, climbing gym etiquette, and general risk management as it pertains to the UT Climbing Wall, bouldering at other gyms, and bouldering outside.

This Top Rope Techniques class will build on the basic techniques learned in the Bouldering class. Climbers will be introduced to more advanced movement skills and learn how to manage top rope climbing systems indoors. Students will understand how to use gear such as a harness, belay devices, carabiners, and rope to explore the vertical climbing environment. The course will teach students how to belay a top rope climber, how to lower them to the ground, and how to manage the rope while climbing.
Prerequisite: Completion of the Bouldering class or documented appropriate climbing experience.
