Bouldering

Introduces new climbers to the movement, physiology, and dynamics of bouldering (climbing without a rope). Participants will also learn terminology, safe practices, and movement skills, which will help them advance as independent climbers. The course will focus on bouldering mat placement, spotting, climbing gym etiquette, and general risk management as it pertains to the UT Climbing Wall, bouldering at other gyms, and bouldering outside.

Top Rope Techniques

This climbing course will build off of the basic techniques learned in the Bouldering course. Climbers will be introduced to more advanced movement skills, and learn how to manage and top-rope climbing systems indoors. Students will understand how to use gear such as a harness, belay devices, carabiners, and rope to explore the vertical climbing environment. The course will teach students how to belay a top-rope climber, how to lower them to the ground, and how to manage the rope while climbing.
Prerequisite: Completion of the Bouldering class or documented climbing experience.

Lead Climbing

This intermediate class builds on topics discussed in Top Rope Techniques during two 2-hour sessions focusing on the systems and skills required to lead climb in an indoor setting. Students will learn how to lead belay, catch lead falls, clip quick draws and what to do in case of a fall.
Prerequisite: Completion of Top Rope Techniques class or documented climbing experience.
