The Bombers

Three-Time Women’s National Collegiate Flag Football Champions

In 1978, Kevin McCalla ‘79 organized a coed football team with his little sister, Linda McCalla ‘82, at quarterback. The Bombers, as the team was called, came from Linda’s unusual arm strength and her ability to “throw the bomb.” After winning the coed football championship in 1978, the Bombers continued to have success in football and basketball over the next few seasons. In 1982, a women’s Bombers football team was organized with Kevin overseeing the offense and Chris Schultz ‘82 coaching the defense.

Despite losing a close overtime final to the Trainers that first year, the Bombers represented UT at the Budweiser National Collegiate Flag Football Championships (BNCFFC) in New Orleans after defeating the University of Texas at Arlington women in regionals. The Bombers won their first national championship by repeating their regional victory over the women of UTA 19-6. They then won the next four intramural championships (1983, 1984, 1985 & 1986) and repeated as national champions in 1983 and 1985. The 1984 team lost 6-0 in the finals to the host team from New Orleans. The ’86 Bombers declined to attend nationals. In five seasons (1982-1986) the Bomber's win/loss record was an astounding 75 and 3.
