John M. Childs Endowed Scholarship
William R. (Bill) Childs established the John M. Childs Endowed Scholarship in memory of his younger brother who played intramurals as an Alpha Phi Omega (APO) member. Like Bill, John also officiated intramural games and was recognized as an Honorable Mention for the Division's Outstanding Official Award. To honor the brothers’ time with RecSports, this scholarship will be awarded to a student employee who works as an intramural official for the Division and has a passion for recreational sports.
In addition to his involvement with RecSports, John Childs was very active with the Texas Exes Longhorn Travel program and had the opportunity to explore the world. He stayed active throughout his life skiing, canoeing and hiking and enjoyed a successful career as a CPA in Houston, Texas.
Bill Childs earned three degrees from UT and a place on the Wall of Fame for football and softball. After college, he continued living an active lifestyle, skiing, playing basketball and softball. He recently retired from a 30-year career as a history professor and moved back to Austin with his wife. Despite the time that’s passed since graduating, Bill has always stayed connected with RecSports through his friendship with the Division’s own Bob Childress. The two have been friends since childhood.
