Eligibility
  • Available for currently enrolled UT students, RecSports members, and non-members.
  • Participants must be 15 years or older on the first day of the course to participate and be certified.

Course Description

All lifeguard certification courses are blended learning. This means there is a portion of the course that needs to be completed online before coming in for the in-person skill session. Participants must register for the course at least five days before the first class date so that they can receive the online modules with a sufficient amount of time to complete them. Participants who do not complete the online portion successfully will not be allowed to complete the class and will not receive a certification or refund.

Upon completing the online and in-person portions of the class, an American Red Cross® Lifeguard Certification certification will be issued. All certifications are valid for two years.

Prerequisite: You must be able to pass a pre-course swimming skills test before completing the lifeguard certification class. The skills test, administered on the first day of class, includes:

  • Swimming 300 yards using front crawl or breaststroke
  • Treading water for two minutes using legs only
  • Swimming 20 yards, retrieving a 15-pound weight from 10 feet deep, surface, and swimming 20 yards with the weight, using legs only and exiting the pool without using a ladder within 100 seconds. Goggles cannot be used for this portion of the test.

Please note: no refunds or transfers will be issued to participants who do not pass the skills test or who fail to attend the class for which they registered.
